George VI, whose full name was Albert Frederick Arthur George, was named after his great-grandfather, Albert, Prince Consort. He reigned as the King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11th December 1936, until his passing on 6th February 1952. Notably, he held the title of the last Emperor of India, as India gained independence in August 1947. Furthermore, he became the inaugural head of the Commonwealth following the London Declaration of 1949.
George VI was born during the reign of his great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. He was the second son of George V, who himself was the second son of Edward VII. George V’s elder brother, Prince Albert Victor, passed away at a young age, which led to George V becoming next in line for the throne after his father. Similarly, George VI, as the second son, assumed the throne after his elder brother, Edward VIII, abdicated.
George VI served in both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force during the First World War. In 1923, he married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, and together they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.

Description: The verso side of the stamp showing its perfin.
King George VI and the House of Parliament, London.

As indicated by the date on the postage stamp, ’08 May 1946,’ it was intended to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day). VE Day, which occurred on 08 May 1945, marked the formal acceptance by the Allied forces of Germany’s unconditional surrender in World War II. This significant day signified the official conclusion of the conflict in Europe in the Eastern Front, with the last recorded shots fired on May 11.
The postage stamp depicts a picture of King George VI with the backdrop of the Houses of Parliament in London.
