On This Day, 16 January 1881: Eastern Rumelia Issues Its First Official Postage Stamp

16 January – On This Day in Postal History

On 16 January 1881, Eastern Rumelia issued its first official postage stamp, marking a significant milestone in Balkan and Ottoman-era postal history. This vintage stamp reflects the political complexity of the region in the late 19th century and remains highly collectible among philatelists today.

Brief History of Eastern Rumelia

Eastern Rumelia corresponds largely to what is now Southern Bulgaria. Following the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, the region was established as an autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire, while remaining under Ottoman sovereignty.

In 1885, Eastern Rumelia was united with the Principality of Bulgaria, effectively ending its existence as a separate administrative entity, although full international recognition of Bulgaria’s independence did not occur until 1908.

Russian Influence and the Treaty of Berlin

Russian influence in Eastern Rumelia intensified following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. After Russia’s victory, the Treaty of Berlin reshaped the Balkans as follows:

  • The Principality of Bulgaria became an autonomous state under Ottoman suzerainty
  • Eastern Rumelia remained an autonomous Ottoman province
  • Macedonia returned to direct Ottoman control

These arrangements were imposed by European powers to limit Russian dominance in the region. Despite this, Russian influence continued in military, religious, and administrative affairs throughout Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia.

Early Postal Services in Eastern Rumelia

Before issuing its own stamps, Eastern Rumelia relied on Ottoman postal services, which used standard Ottoman postage stamps. These services were often slow and unreliable.

In 1880, Ottoman (Turkish) postage stamps were supplied to Eastern Rumelia and overprinted with the words “ROUMELIE / ORIENTALE” in an oval frame for local use. These overprinted Turkish stamps represented an early transitional phase toward Eastern Rumelia’s own postal identity.

First Eastern Rumelia Postage Stamp – 1881

The government of Eastern Rumelia ultimately found continued reliance on Ottoman stamps unsuitable and decided to issue its own official postage stamps.

The first Eastern Rumelia postage stamp, released on 16 January 1881, was inspired by Ottoman design elements. The stamp featured the province’s name in four languages:

  • Turkish
  • French
  • Greek
  • Bulgarian

It was issued with a denomination of 20 paras and is today regarded as a key Eastern Rumelia vintage postage stamp.

Why This Stamp Matters to Collectors

This 1881 issue represents:
