Mauritius Coat of Arms & Diamond Jubilee Issue Stamps

Mauritius Coat of Arms & Diamond Jubilee Postage Stamps

Coat Of Arms 12 & 3

The coat of arms of Mauritius is stipulated in the
Mauritius Laws 1990 Vol. 2 SCHEDULE (Section 2) and was embraced in 1906.

Guarded by Mauritius national bird Dodo and a Sambar Deer,
with a sugar cane on each side. The arms are in Royal Blue and Goldish colours and
have four parts, a Lymphad, three Palm trees, a Red Key and a Mullet Argent.

The motto of the coat of arms in Latin is as follows:

“Stella Clavisque Maris Indicis”.

Which means ‘’Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’’ in English.

The Coat Of Arms of Mauritius was designed by Johann Van Der
Puf, the mayor of Johannesburg in 1906.

The Stamps – ”Coat Of Arms issues”

However, in the Stamps of the Coat of Arms series, only the middle arms is illustrated and neither the motto nor the supporters which are the Dodo, Sambar Deer and Sugar Cane are included. These stamps were issued between 1895 and 1905.

With Perfin – Perforated Postage Stamp

Perfin

The practice of Perfin originated in Great Britain in 1868 and quickly spread to Belgium in 1872, followed by Denmark, France, Germany, and Switzerland in 1876, Austria in 1877, and finally the U.S. in 1908. Perfin is a term that stands for perforated initials or perforated insignia, and it is sometimes also known as SPIFS, which is an abbreviation for Stamps Perforated with Initials of Firms and Societies.

Perfin, as its name suggests, is a technique utilized to puncture stamps with holes in order to incorporate initials or the name of the organizations possessing them, as a precautionary measure against theft. This is due to the fact that in Britain, unused stamps could be sold back to the post office during that time. As a result, perforated stamps can only be used by authorized entities, and if they are stolen, the stamp would hold no worth.

Perforated postage stamps, once regarded as damaged and undeserving of collection, have now gained significant value and are greatly desired by collectors with specialized interests. Identifying the specific uses of each perfin can be challenging as they often lack distinguishing characteristics.

Surcharged

In stamp collecting, the term “surcharge” is used to indicate an overprint on stamps that alters their prices. The value of the stamp can either decrease or increase. This occurs when there is a need to swiftly change the price of the stamp, but it is not feasible to create new stamps within the limited time frame, and/or
when there are surplus stamps that are no longer required.

From 1st March 1869 to 1904, Mauritius issued Revenue Stamps that have several types of fiscal stamps for different purposes such as those designed for tax collections or fees on documents associated between businesses and the state.

In 1904 a new variety of stamps with “Insurance Only” overprints were issued. Three different formats were available and they had empty values tablets which were then overprinted to determine their worth.

Mauritius Diamond Jubilee Issue

15 cent Diamond Jubilee Mauritius Postage Stamps

The official celebration of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee took place on 22nd June 1897, commemorating her 60th anniversary since ascending to the throne on 20th June 1837. Queen Victoria holds the distinction of being the first British monarch to ever celebrate a Diamond Jubilee.

Unlike the Mauritius Coat of Arms Issues, the Diamond Jubilee issues do not portray the arms. Instead, their design incorporates the motto “Stella Clavisque Maris Indicis.”

Mauritius holds the distinction of being one of the pioneering nations in issuing commemorative stamps. To commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, Mauritius released stamps valued at 36 cents. Later on, these stamps were overprinted with reduced denominations: 15 Mauritian cents in 1899 and 12 Mauritian cents in 1902.
