King George V Mauritius Postage Stamps

King George Mauritius Postage Stamp

George V, whose full name was George Frederick Ernest Albert, ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and the Emperor of India on May 6, 1910, and reigned until his passing on January 20, 1936. Initially, he held the third position in line for the throne, as he was the second son of Edward VII. The first son and the immediate successor to Edward VII was Prince Albert Victor. Unfortunately, Prince Albert Victor passed away at the age of 28 due to influenza during the pandemic of 1889-1892, while Queen Victoria was still the reigning monarch.

Upon the passing of Queen Victoria, Edward VII became the King, and George V assumed the title of Prince of Wales, eventually becoming King following the death of Edward VII.

During George V and King Edward VII’s reign, Mauritius was under British rule, which is why the island featured the monarch’s images on their postage stamps at that time.

King Edward VII Mauritius Postage Stamps

Edward VII, the father and predecessor of King George V, reigned from the 22nd of January 1901 until his passing on the 6th of May 1910. As the son and heir to Queen Victoria, his reign marked the beginning of a new century. As king, Edward had a part in modernizing the British Home Fleet and restructuring the British Army following the conclusion of the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1902. He reintroduced traditional ceremonies as public displays and expanded the range of people with whom the royals could socialize. During his monarchy, significant changes in technology and society occurred, along with the rise of socialism. This era came to be known as the Edwardian era.

Edward VII played a crucial role in fostering peace with various countries, between Britain and other European nations, notably France, earning him the nickname “Peacemaker”.
